Domestic Violence: How Health Care Providers Can Help

$15.00

Abstract

Domestic violence occurs in every culture, country and age group. It affects people from all socioeconomic, educational and religious backgrounds, and takes place in same sex as well as heterosexual relationships. Disproportionately, more females than males are victims of domestic abuse. Every year, domestic violence accounts for approximately 1,200 deaths and 2 million injuries among women, and 600,000 injuries among men, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Worldwi...de, it is estimated that up to half of all women have experienced physical violence at the hands of an intimate partner or family member. Although highly prevalent, domestic violence typically remains hidden and undetected because victims often conceal that they are in abusive relationships and the clues pointing to abuse sometimes may be subtle or absent.

This educational activity will provide current information on incidence of domestic abuse and identify resources for obtaining best practice information. In addition, the program provides healthcare providers with insight into effective strategies and screening guidelines to improve detection of victims of abuse and facilitate discussion of the topic with them, as well as improve knowledge of available resources that can assist this patient population.
