First Issue: Progress in Cancer Vaccine Development

For decades, cancer treatment has consisted primarily of surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. However, therapies (specifically vaccines) are being developed that stimulate the body's innate defense system to target malignant tumors. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has previously approved two vaccines that can help prevent cancer caused by: 1) the human papillomavirus (HPV), which causes nearly all cervical cancers; and 2) the hepatitis B virus, which can cause liver cancer. Other vaccines that may prevent or reduce the risk of different cancers are being evaluated in clinical trials. Although the FDA has not yet approved any cancer vaccine as a standard treatment for any previously diagnosed cancer, promising Phase III data for vaccines targeting several tumor types were recently presented at the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and American Urological Association (AUA) conferences.
